The original Dumbo was such a joy to watch filled with heartfelt moments and gorgeous animations and was one of Disney’s staples. Dumbo the silly elephant that can fly that came out 1941 was all kind of wondrous, silly and imaginative. Does Disney’s remake of the dumb old elephant capture the magic of the original Dumbo? That answer is no. Instead, Disney and Tim Burton created a monstrosity and have forever scarred Dumbo’s image. At this point, Disney should just retire Dumbo and end the silly elephant with scarred memories.
The movie started out quite promising. At one point I said this to myself over and over again – “Did Disney really do it”? “Did they really capture the beauty of the original Dumbo”? I was a fool. As the movie went on and on the cracks started to get stronger and stronger and when the horror finally ended the whole film had already cracked into pieces. They should have completed the movie on a good note. Dumbo flying in the circus. That would have been a cute movie. A short one yes but it would have been quite lovely but nope – the film went on and on and the entire second half was a bore. I looked around, and I saw a few children sleeping – clearly Dumbo bored these little kids to death too, so I wasn’t the only one. If anything Disney should remove the 0 from Dumbo and just call this movie DUMB. D-U-M-B because clearly, this movie does not deserve that magical 0. Hell, half the movie wasn’t even about the silly elephant. I felt like I was watching a film about the little kids and circus friends.
Also what was wrong with the cast in this movie? The child actors were all terrible. I don’t like to insult child actors, but maybe a little snub is needed in this case. Nico Parker was terrible as Milly, and Finley Hobbins was atrocious as Joe Farrier. What happened to Eva Green and Collin Farrell in this movie? Both the actor and the actress are better than this and have much more to offer. The cast was not even trying I felt. It was a robotic act from all the actors/actresses. I do wonder how Disney thought it was okay to give this movie the go ahead. Of course, Danny Devito was excellent as usual, and it is a goddamn shame that it felt like he was the only actor that was actually trying. One good actor cannot save a terrible movie. It has to be a joint effort.
The cinematography was oddly cheap and disappointing. You’d think a company as big as Disney would have made sure that the cinematography was top notch. Even the movie poster was created with dull red and white striped colours. One thing I’d say though is Dumbo was pretty cute, and I liked how he looked in this remake. The CGI was okay at best. If anything maybe Tim Burton is past his prime? Why? Because D-U-M-B is clearly a failure.
Dumbo is not the worst movie of 2019, but it doesn’t leave me confident for other remakes this year like Alladin and The Lion King or the upcoming Artemis Fowl. Disney, what are you doing?
