Before we get straight into the review can I just say that this is by far the most surprising game of this year? Call of Duty games for the past few years have been in the range from below average to just okay to just mindless fun but nothing special and I really feel like the team at Activision really poured in everything into this one. Modern Warfare games are among some of the best Call of Duty games and Modern Warfare 2019 does not disappoint.
Firstly let us talk about the content of the game itself. If you’re one of the lucky people with the Playstation 4 version you’ll have access to the survival mode. A bit scummy but it’s a marketing deal and in the end, it is business between giant companies. There are 3 main modes in this game. The general campaign, multiplayer and co-op. That’s right, this is one of the rare games in 2019 to have couch co-op so you can splatter blood with your friends on the couch if you want…well if that’s what you’re into. The multiplayer in this game is quite traditional and in a way goes back to its root. I was quite delighted with this because I think sometimes it is best to go back to the basics. There is also a randomizer in which you can play random multiplayer modes. Along with special ops and a few other modes, the multiplayer is a bit light in content – and I found that to be ok? I can see what they were going for with Modern Warfare. Basic and simple and hell it worked. There is a levelling up system of course and you can pick between allegiance and coalition (if you pick coalition you will always lose every multiplayer game, trust me, the allegiance are always better) but other than that there isn’t that much depth to the multiplayer and that is completely fine because it is well executed.
With all that being said it is clear the main focus was working on the campaign and holy moly is it a goddamn banger. Being honest I don’t care for most of the campaign in Call of Duty games. Most of them are tedious and just extra work and usually when I buy my yearly shoot, shoot, shoot I go straight to the multiplayer so I can play with my buddies in a party while talking about a whole lot of rubbish. This year I decided to take my time with the campaign and I was amazed. The writing isn’t actually terrible, the gameplay is top-notch and the visuals and cinematics are outstanding. I felt like I was playing a Sony blockbuster. The campaign isn’t very long. About 5hrs or so. I’m not sure if the game is worth it for just the campaign but if you’re one of those people that go straight to the multiplayer and forget that the campaign even exists – please try it out this year. Aside from that the visuals as I said in the game great, there are some new gameplay mechanics like attaching yourself to the wall while shooting and the multiplayer and campaign are top tier.
To wrap it up – Modern Warfare is a banger. It is without a doubt the best Call of Duty game in a long long time. Highly recommended!
