BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle – First Impressions

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is a frenzy crossover featuring characters from BlazBlue, Persona 4, Under Birth and finally RWBY. Arc System Works released a beta for this upcoming fighting game the other day, so if you live in the US, and want to try out this game then be sure to go and download the beta before it ends

Not The BlazBlue you remember

I’ve played the beta for three days now, and I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time playing this game and learning some of the characters. All of the characters in this game are accessible and are quite easy to use. This game does not play like BlazBlue at all, and for some, that may be a bad thing, while for others this may be a great thing.

Dragon Ball Fighter Z is another easy fighting game which released earlier this year, and it’s a fantastic game too. Arc System Works managed to create a game that’s perfect for newcomers yet appropriate for veterans too, and it seems they are doing this with BlazBlue as well.

I’m going to be completely honest with you, I’m not really a fan of this new “accessible” BlazBlue, but I think I’ll get used to it. The reason why I say this is because when I think “BlazBlue” I think of a chaotic, fast-paced fighter with insane button commands for each character. For example, If I were to learn how to play as Hazama or Rachel in BlazBlue, it would take me days or even months to learn how to master these characters, and I always felt rewarded at the end. Both Hazama and Rachel are in the Cross Tag Battle beta, and they are both quite easy to use. If you are coming from Central Fiction and if you’re expecting this to be the next chaotic “BlazBlue” game with insane button commands, then you’ll be disappointed.

I’m not fully ready to commit to this new BlazBlue playstyle yet, but this is probably the step in the right direction as it will attract newcomers, so I’m in support of what Arc System Works is doing.

Fun Gameplay with minor issues

The game itself is fun though, The game is a breeze to play, but I’ve really enjoyed my time with it so far. The only problem I had with this beta is that the life bars deplete too quickly to the point where fights can end too soon, causing them to be unsatisfying sometimes. It isn’t a big issue, but it can be irritating sometimes.

Disappointing Visuals

The one huge problem I have with this game is the visuals and the overall presentation. The sprites for almost all of the characters are outdated and mediocre, especially for the BlazBlue characters. The game looks especially bad on a big HD TV. These outdated 2D sprites cause the game to look quite pixilated on the TV. The only exception to this is the RWBY characters. The RWBY characters have gorgeous 2D sprites and, I can only hope after this game Arc System Works redo all the BlazBlue sprites.
